What to practice on guitar?

Hey guys, I've been playing guitar for around a month now. I use an Epiphone Goth 1958 Explorer and a line 6 spyder III amp. I've learned the major chords and most of the minor chords, along with a few scale patterns such as minor pentatonic. I would like to eventually be able to play metal, blues, rock, and alternative songs that are at an advanced level. My only issue is not knowing what to practice. I don't know what exercises or techniques to learn, and I attempt to find tab that I feel like should be play fairly well at my level, but I end up picking too advanced songs. I'd love someone to be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you[:
