My 2005 Mitsubishi Spyder makes clicking noises when I turn the key and doesn't start.?

The radio and lights come on no problem, so I'm thinking it's probably not the battery. How can I tell if it's the starter or the alternator? Can someone please help a gal out? I have virtually no $$ for a mechanic. :-(
