Why is there no record of my discharge or out processing?

i was in the army for just about 6 months, i just got done with ait and i went awol for two weeks but went back and the company gave me the option to stay in or get out. at the time i didn't know what i wanted, just out of high school. well i was there for month out processing and once that was done i went home. im trying to find out the type of discharge because i would like to re-enlist. i have been to the national archives website from st louis to get a copy of any paperwork but after several tries they found nothing. ive been told to contact original unit but i wasn't ever in a unit i was at the replacement company when i was separated and called post operator who redirected to someone else and the sgt i talked to said they only keep records like that for up to two years and its been five. when i was separated and out processed i never received a dd214 and every where i go theres no record of me being in but just last years the VA has been sending me letters offering benefits and letters saying thanks for your service. did someone just mess up on my paperwork somewhere and what can i do?
